“Now … I look back on the Elderhostel experiences. It has been so enriching! I really enjoyed learning about the South in Memphis as I had never been to the Southern states. They showed me the great Mississippi and taught me about great writers … At the University of Wyoming (Laramie), I learned about the West. Had you not granted me those two scholarships I could not have had either of my experiences … As a retired teacher, I loved staying in the dorm … I was too poor to stay in the dorm when I was young — I had to commute to college. But here in my old age, I was getting to do it. How much I thank you!”
— Margaret Smith, a retired school teacher and scholarship recipient

When Marty Knowlton and David Bianco founded Elderhostel 30 years ago, they could not have imagined a revolution was about to take place — but it did! Guided by their vision and driven by participants’ zest for learning, Elderhostel reshaped the expectations of a generation of older adults and changed society’s perceptions of aging.

On the special occasion of our 30th Anniversary in 2005,

Elderhostel Founders,
Marty Knowlton & David Bianco

Elderhostel established the Founders Fund. This endowed fund will provide scholarship assistance to those eager to participate in Elderhostel programs but lacking the financial resources to enroll.

Scholarships have been an integral part of Elderhostel from the start. Marty and David saw to it that no older adult courageous enough to enroll in those early days would be prevented from participating due to financial hardship. The Founders Fund will help us continue this commitment in perpetuity.

Honor Marty and David — or someone special to you — by contributing to the Founders Fund. Your gift will become part of the endowed fund that provides scholarship assistance to Founders Scholars. Help make Margaret Smith’s life-changing experience available to others.

You can make a gift of any amount — large or small, outright and testamentary — to be added to the existing Founders Fund.

Or, you can endow a scholarship and name it for yourself or someone special with a gift of $10,000 or more.

For more information, please contact Ann Simanis, Associate Vice President of Development at 617-457-5429 or ann.simanis@elderhostel.org. You may also download a printable pdf form to give to the Founders Fund. Please send your tax-deductible contribution to:
