Original Inquiry from Sara Skaggs, Center for Learning in Retirement
, Rock Valley College, Rockford, IL
Our ILR is working on a "Talent Bank" database, in an attempt
to explore what members did in their "former life," information
that could be used by our host college when counseling students. With
members' consent, a roster of occupations would be available to consult
when a student requests specifics about majoring in a particular discipline
(i.e. engineering, nursing, teaching, etc.). Conceivably, ILR members
could be contacted to talk with the students about their occupation and
share their insights, mentoring the students. This same database would
provide specific information for future ILR leader talent, as well as
class leaders for curriculum. The public schools in this area have expressed
interest in such a database, too. Have any of your ILRs worked on such
a project with your host college? Any suggestions on information to garner
for use on such a project? Would appreciate any & all suggestions!

We have not, but it sounds like a great idea. If you would not mind, I
would love to hear what you learn from others. I think you have a great
plan here.

College, Holland, MI.
Although we do not call it a talent database, HASP does keep a record
of member "talent" and interest. HASP operates in a slightly
different manner than some ILRs in that we require an application for
membership. The application requests information on career, education,
interests, hobbies, community service, etc. Using a program designed for
church membership, we track these areas of interest and talent. It is
a wonderful source for our curriculum committee as well as our service
committee. Good luck with your project. I am sure that, although the initial
data entry will seem long (especially with 2000 members), you will find
the information invaluable.

Hi Sara! Your project is one which I know our Board is interested in but
has not pursued to date. I would be interested in your results so keep
me posted. Our membership has remained pretty much constant around 500.
I can't imagine how you manage services for 2000!
