The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Michigan
in Ann Arbor will end their lecture season with a six-week series on a
place not on the LLI schedule before – South America. The theme
is, “What’s Happening in South America?” Six countries
will be featured: Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Venezuela, Peru and Brazil.
All the speakers will either be native or researchers who frequently visit
the countries.
Newspapers recently have provided coverage about the first woman president
of Chile and the Aymara Indian president of Bolivia, Evo Morales. Governments
of Venezuela and Brazil are engaged in confrontations with the United
States. Argentina is trying to redress the crimes of the Peron era,
while Peru continues to struggle with its economy.
These happenings promise a very interesting series starting on Thursday,
April 5 and running through Thursday, May 10. As usual the lectures
will be held at the Best Western Conference Center between 10-11 a.m.
and will be followed by a half hour of questions and answers.
