Simone de Beauvoir journeyed to America in January, 1947. Although
she did not intend to write a book, she kept a detailed diary of her
observations, which was published in France in 1948. This was two
years before the publication of The Second Sex. The reader
is struck not only by the meticulous descriptive passages of American
history and geography but also by Beauvoir’s ability to encapsulate
our national psyche and to comment on our shortcomings. Feminism is
also discussed openly and causes us to take note. Participants shared
her vision and compared it with their own while discussing the two
following books over six weeks.
