Fitness Group
The Fitness Group, new this year, is intended for members interested in
increasing their knowledge of physical fitness practices for seniors.
It is not an exercise group but rather is designed for the exchange of
information related to effective exercise, strength training and nutrition.
Discussion will be informal. Opportunities to participate in studies being
carried out in this area of gerontology may also arise. Meetings will
be held on the first Wednesday of each month, from 10:30 to noon, at UGA
Gerontology Institute. Members have the option of lunching together at
a local restaurant afterward. (The Institute is located at the corner
of Hancock and College Avenues, across from City Hall.) Dr. Elaine Cress
of the Institute will serve as advisor to the group.
Stitch and Chat
This is a group for people who like to stitch and socialize in the company
of others who like to “stitch and chat” and share ideas and
techniques. Meetings are held year-round at individual members’
homes on the first Thursday of each month, with an occasional meeting
held at a local restaurant instead and occasional trips to area yarn shops.
Quilting Group
The Quilting Group meets twice a month to hand quilt, exchange information
and ideas and keep abreast of new methods. The group also attends area
expositions of hand quilting. Meetings are on the first and third Tuesday
of each month at the homes of members.
Bridge Group
The Bridge Group meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month
from 1:00–4:00 p.m. at the Council on Aging, 135 Hoyt Street, Athens.
It is designed for those with a serious interest in contract bridge who
want to play in an environment that promotes an exchange of ideas about
the game and the hierarchy of expertise needed to advance in competence.
At each meeting, rounds of games allow members to assess their ability
to improve their skills.
Bonsai Group
The Bonsai Group is made up of individuals who have an interest in this
ancient botanical practice. The group meets at the Council on Aging, 135
Hoyt Street, Athens, on the third Thursday of each month at 2:00 p.m.
Members share their knowledge and experience and have made informational
and buying trips to sites such as Lotus Wholesale Nursery, The Pottery,
and the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers.
Book Discussion Group
The Book Discussion Group meets on the second Thursday of each month in
the Board Room of the Council on Aging, 135 Hoyt Street, Athens, from
3:00–4:00 p.m. Books are selected by group members. Discussion is
informal and participation is encouraged. The book selections include
fiction and nonfiction, contemporary and classic.
Lady Dogs Basketball
This is the group for dedicated Lady Dogs fans who want to support the
team with a block presence. Group members sit together at the home games,
cheer on the team and enjoy an opportunity to socialize. About twice a
year when home games are scheduled for Sunday afternoon, the group lunches
at the Savannah Room beforehand.
