No matter who we are, or where we live, the rebirth that is spring
is with us.
Each of us celebrates it in our own way. Easter, Passover and other
traditions and rituals. What prompts the feeling of rebirth. Our scientists
have taught us cells die and cells are born. Throughout our lives birth
and death are benchmarks in life, but not final statements.
We of the lifelong learning community discovered this fact many years
ago. Most of us realize our conscious lives are but a segment of our
total existence. We enter life with some connection to our biological
parents, and their selves are recorded experiences of generations that
preceded them. Thus our lives are from "prenatal to postmortem."
In our Jewish liturgy we say, "Fear not death nor what is yet
to be." We are taught honor the day in which you find yourself.
It is your birthday. We err when we treat the present day lightly, not
giving it its own eternal aspects.
One of my teachers once said to me, "Don't get caught up in what
seems to be the current vogue in your life. It's transitory. Tomorrow
it will be part of the eternal prenatal ready to give birth to another
historical segment."
Enjoy the spring. Enjoy its message of hope. May it give you the strength
to face today and another day.
