Learning in Retirement, Inc. at the University of Georgia in Athens offers members a series of lectures on the first Monday of the month. Current topics include:

Robert E. Lee Right Now – What does Robert E. Lee mean to us today? A quintessential scholar of eight books on Robert E. Lee will answer this along with many other questions about this famous Civil War general.

Spanish Artist Alvar Sunol – The speaker at this lecture has produced a full-length documentary about this Spanish artist who won worldwide attention for his paintings, lithographs, drawings, ceramics, and bronze sculptures. She will discuss Alvar’w work and show several original pieces.

Treasures from the UGA Libraries – The UGA library has rich and varied special collections. For instance, in the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, one finds a treasure trove from the Colonial and Confederate Eras with a tremendous Civil War collection which includes maps journals, letters, and photographs. There are also collections which document the history of theater from around the world through costume and set design, the largest collection of Margaret Mitchell materials, and collections from other Georgia authors and State dignitaries. Participants will also learn how to go about accessing these materials electronically and about preserving their own treasured documents.

Late-Blooming Creativity in the Visual Arts – The lecturer will speak about late-blooming creativity with the hope that the works of late-blooming artists might inspire, interest, and even motivate LIR members to continue to pursue with passion their own creative endeavors. Some LIR members will also show their own works.
