A STUDY OF THE MEDIA’S IMPACT UPON OUR SOCIETY
This fall, members of Lifelong Learners at the Fairfield Senior
Center in cooperation with Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut
will be taking a six-week look at this stimulating topic. The following
description is taken from their Fall 2007 course catalog.
Through the psychology of art and design, media has leveraged an increasing
force on our culture. Marshall McLuhen has famously hypothesized that
the “Medium is the Message.” As the dictum has entered the
24-hour news, Internet, instant messaging era, it has also developed
a new meaning, where the Media has become the message. This six week
course traces the impact of design on media and, by extension, media’s
on society. It explores the way the media has been shaped in the viscous
cycle of our culture since the invention of photography 170 years ago.
The design of the Media, both through graphics and in its psychology
has developed a direction over time, and this class explores how this
phenomenon has not happened in a vacuum.
The facilitator of this course has had a 30-year career in graphic
design and new media production as a supervising art director and new
media developer. He has co-authored Motion by Design, a book/DVD
package.
