CELEBRATING DIVERSITY: INDIA
Last month the Academy for Lifelong Learning at Empire State College
in Saratoga Springs, New York invited Academy members and the general
public to an afternoon of traditional Indian music, dancing, culture
and refreshments. Participants had the opportunity to take part in
an Indian folk dance, learn about Indian religions, experience mehandi(henna)
and bindi application, and they learned how to don a sari. They viewed
clips of traditional Indian weddings and Bollywood films. Attendees
even had the opportunity to plan a future trip to India. Indian snacks,
sweets and masala chai were served.
The Center for Distance Learning at Empire State College was the
event sponsor. Karavalli Restaurant and Usha Chandra donated the food.
Saratoga Today, the local newspaper, and Star 101.5 radio
were media sponsors. This free and open-to-the-public Academy for
Lifelong Learning 15th Anniversary special event was organized in
collaboration with Bidhan Chandra of the Center for Distance Learning
and the local Indian community.
