The Community Academy for Lifelong Learning in State College, Pennsylvania
offered the following stimulating series of courses this summer. The courses
are led by four faculty experts in their fields.
Geology: Prehistory of Centre County - The last half
billion years of Pennsylvania geological history will be studied.
Examples of Historic Archaeology in Pennsylvania –
Examples of Pennsylvania’s history from written records and artifacts
will be used to show what has been learned from historic archaeology.
Ice Age Fossils of Central Pennsylvania – Discussions
of the ecology of Central Pennsylvania during the Ice Age based upon
research from 9,000 excavated animal fossils from a cave near Altoona.
A fossil hunt is also part of this workshop.
Prehistoric Centre County – A study of how long
people have been in Centre County and what they were doing while they
were here. A field trip is a nature center to study excavating methods
is also planned.
DNA in Genealogy – Some of the newly developed
DNA techniques for helping family historians solve problems in genealogy
will be discussed. This introductory course will focus especially on
the use of Y-chromosomal DNA in projects involving specific surnames.
Topics to be covered include the types of information that can be gained,
limitations of the method, internet sources for further information,
information on companies that do the analysis and examples of success
stories.
