Original Query from Marion Lowenthal, Molloy
ILR, Molloy College, Rockville Centre, NY
We are about to celebrate our tenth anniversary. I would welcome some ideas
or suggestions how some of the LLIs recognized their big anniversaries.
From Merle Allshouse, ASPEC, Eckerd College,

We are starting to make plans for our 15 anniversary. Our members are putting
together a history of the organization and would like to know if other LLIs
have worked on this project. If anyone has printed a history, could we please
have a copy? From Joe Scorpion, Academy
for Lifelong Learning, Carnegie Mellon University, PA
We will be 10 years old on Sept.13th. We are planning an on-campus gala
celebration on October 25th. We are completing our 10-year history (6 chapters)
and will be going to press in May. When completed, I will send you a copy.
When is your 15th anniversary celebration? Any questions, please get back
to me. Best wishes!! From Rita Carozza,
Academy for Learning in Retirement, SUNY, Saratoga Springs, NY.
A year ago when we were beginning to work on our plans for celebrating our
10th Anniversary in 2002-2003, we put out a query on the forum and had a
great response. It was a big help and we thank everyone. Here are our plans
for those who wanted some feedback. In the fall we are doing an Anniversary
Kick-off Luncheon at a restaurant with a special program, "This Is Your
Life ALR," followed by our fall course orientation. We will be distributing
complimentary copies of an 18-month calendar with pictures, historical anecdotes,
lists of course leaders, committee chairs, etc. We decided to do this calendar
in lieu of a history book. We will also give out complimentary copies of
our journal "The Apple Tree" which showcases writings, photos and drawings
done by our members and which will have a special section for the 10th Anniversary
with interviews from longtime members who share their experiences and other
writings pertaining to ALR. In October, we are holding a weekend retreat
with classes and special programs at a conference center on Lake George.
In December, we will hold a holiday party with hors d'oeuvres at a local
restaurant. In February we are planning a Winter Special and Potluck Luncheon
with a special program featuring "The Glory Days of Radio." The potluck
dishes will be something that might have been served in the 1930's and 40's.
At our spring orientation we will celebrate the anniversary of our pilot
program with cake, candles and balloons. Our big event will be an all-day
event in May, open to the public and featuring a program by The Humor Project
called "Celebrating the Vintage Years with Good Humor."
We will finish off the year with our annual meeting including an ice cream
social. We are also making plans for a 3-day excursion to Quebec City. Our
website is www.esc.edu/ALR. Hope this is helpful to those planning an anniversary.
Good luck. From EIN
Ask one of your Institute members to be the "official" historian. Many LLIs
keep a scrapbook up-to-date with any material they deem
appropriate.
Another useful volunteer project is to have one or more members review
all the past Minutes of the Board meetings and take note of
any important event, etc. These can be used to develop a history of your
LLI.
