10th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Congratulations to the Lifetime Learning Institute of Northern Virginia, Annandale. They are celebrating their 10th Anniversary this year with a special Anniversary luncheon to be held at a local conference center. Many special events are planned.

HELPING HANDS
Members of the Academy for Lifelong Learning at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh epitomize the idea of giving back to their communities.

This past fall members assisted the school with the annual Homecoming Weekend.

Members were also very generous in giving to the CMU Food Drive. The drive collected 5,929 pounds of food (the second highest amount ever, and 1,200 pounds more than last year), along with over $300 in cash. Many needy people benefited from their generosity.

One A.L.L. member, Bob Dickman went south to help out with the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. He spent a week living in a youth camp, lugging cartons of food, water, tents and other necessities for stricken residents and displaced victims.

Fritz Okie, another A.L.L. member, received the Volunteer of the Year Award at a luncheon for 2005 Dominion VITA (Volunteer in the Arts) award winners.

A.L.L. AUTHORS
The Academy for Lifelong Learning at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh is also justly proud of their members’ talents and accomplishments.

George H. Shames, retired from Pitt as a speech and language therapist and psychologist, is the author of a number of books. His newest is The Company of Truth, a suspense novel. While the book is fiction, Dr. Shame’s background, especially in stuttering, is an important element in the novel. It is available at bookstores, and Dr. Shames is being interviewed and lecturing about his book.

Gerry Smith, an active member of A.L.L. is getting attention for her non-fiction book Rome to Beirut. This true story of her ancestor, 19th century monk St. Nimatullah Kassab Hardini, was published in 2001, but she still gets request for it and has had a number of book signings.

McGILL POET IS PUBLISHED
Congratulations to Victoria Wachowich, a member of the McGill Institute for Learning in Retirement in Montreal. She has just recently published a volume of her poetry aptly titled: Poems From the Heart. The collection delves not only into Victoria’s childhood and life but also in it one can see her wisdom, humor and insight all of which make this volume a “must read.” Contact milr.conted@mcgill.ca for information on how to purchase the book.
