AUDIOVISUAL GIFTS
The Institute for Mature Learning at Drury University in Springfield, Missouri recently gave $500 worth of new DVDs to update the audiovisual collection at the University. Among the titles purchased with the money was Moyers on America, which contains three DVDs, Capital Crimes, Is God Green? and The Net at Risk,. Also purchased for the Architecture Department was Mathematics of Architecture. Amish: A People of Preservation, was acquired for Global Perspectives. Also, Chocolat, Grand Voyage, and Monsier Ibrahim, Domestic Violence. Faces of Fear was obtained for Women’s Studies. Scarlet Letter was presented to the English Department. An Inconvenient Truth and Oil on Ice were purchased for the Environmental Science Department. All were DVD’s with the exception of Listening to Children for the Education Department. It was available only on VHS. Also, nine DVD’s replaced the VHS copies of Shakespeare in Love, American Beauty, Braveheart, Forrest Gump, Schindler’s List, The English Patient, Twelfth Night, Titanic and Unforgiven. Well done, IML…an excellent way to enhance your relationship with the University!

IRPE MEMBERS HONORED
Several members of the Institute for Retirees in Pursuit of Education (IRPE) at Brooklyn College in New York have recently been singled out for their accomplishments.
Toby Sanchez was honored by the East Midwood Jewish Center at their Annual Dinner Dance. Toy is the Historian of the East Midwood Jewish Center and was instrumental in getting the Center declared an Historical Building.
Dorothy Schaffner had her work exhibited by the Brooklyn Artists Coalition – “Connections” (Spring Art Exhibit XV at the Pier in Red Hook.)
Alice Levinson auditioned for the Conductor, Clark McAllister, of the Century Village East Symphony Orchestra and subsequently performed Beethoven’s 4th Piano Concerto in January.

10th ANNIVERSARY
This past fall the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of S. Maine in Portland celebrated their 10th Anniversary. There were performances by the OLLI Singers, the Senior Players and the Sixth Age Puppet Opera Troupe. They also honored and recognized founders, volunteers, faculty and students. A free lunch was offered to all members. Congratulations, OLLI!

MILR MEMBERS HONORED
Cheong Pak Chow, a member of the McGill Institute for Learning in Retirement in Montreal has had an orchid named after him in honor of his 80th birthday. The Orchid Registrar of the Royal Horticultural Society announced that an orchid hybrid will be called the Phalaenopsis Cheong Pak Chow. An avid horticulturist, Mr. Pak Chow has been a member as well as a course moderator at MILR for more than 10 years. Congratulations, Mr. Pak Chow!

Mebbie Aikens, a member of the McGill Institute for Learning in Retirement has been names 2007 Citizen of the Year by the Mount Royal Municipal Association. She was been awarded the Schofield Trophy. Mebbie not only volunteers for the Town of Mount Royal, but at her church, at annual book sales and at MILR as well. She also spends many evening supporting local street kids. Congratulations, Mebbie!
