AGE FRIENDLY LEARNING COMMUNITIES
Four delegates represented the McGill Institute for Learning in Retirement
(MILR) at the International Federation on Aging (IFA) 9th Global Conference
held in September in Montreal.
The theme of the conference was: Shaping Tomorrow Today: The Impact
of Design on Aging Well.
MILR’s presentations came under the symposia on Participation.
It is known that persons of all ages who participate actively experience
improved social health and psychological well being. MILR is a model
program illustrating the principles of peer design; i.e. the study groups
and lectures are planned by the members for the members.
MILR encourages individuals to volunteer and get involved, to create
an identity and a role within this specialized educational community.
The three MILR presentations were: Peer Learning: It’s never too
late to do something for yourself,: by Nicole De Rochemont; Consulting
the Participants: Maintaining a successful program design, by Liz Parish
and Carolynn Rafman and Grandmothers of Africa: the Movement in Quebec
and Canada, by Jan McConnell and Nina Minde.
