ABOUT EIN & VIRGINIA PROGRAMS
Carol Eliason, former director of the lifelong learning program at Edison Community College in Florida, and now a resident of Virginia, has written a wonderful article about EIN with mention of some of the Virginia programs. Entitled “Elderhostel’s Lifelong Learning Network,” the article appeared in the September, 2006 issue of “Lifestyles 50+ For the Active Adult.” Carol talked about how the Network originated, included a quote from this writer, and discussed the benefits of joining a lifelong learning program. She then briefly talked about the Christopher Wren Association at the College of William and Mary, the ILR at Old Dominion University, and the Lifelong Learning Society at Christopher Newport University. Thank you, Carol, for a great article.

ADD EIN TO YOUR MAILING LIST
Just a quick reminder, if you haven’t already done so, to please add EIN to the mailing list you use for sending out course catalogs, newsletters and other materials. We read every one we receive, and use the material in them to build content for the EIN web site every month. This is the perfect way to let all the programs know about your outstanding programs, events and happenings. Send them to - Elderhostel Institute Network, 11 Avenue de Lafayette, Boston, MA 02111.

IRP ENSURES MEMBERS WILL NOT BE ALONE

In its survey last spring, the IRP Information and Referral Committee at the New School University in New York City learned that a number of IRP members may spend holidays alone. That being the case, the Committee wanted to provide connections between those who wish to be included in holiday celebrations and those who might offer inclusion in their celebration, whether it be dinner at a member’s or host’s home, gathering in a restaurant or another meal or activity during the holiday weekend. The Committee asked interested members to complete the check-list form in the IRP office if they wanted to participate in this new project. What a great idea!

“THE LLI REVIEW” PUBLISHED

The fall 2006 premier issue of The LLI Review: The Annual Journal of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes has been published and is available in both hard copy and online. An outstanding compilation of research, theory, life stories, best practices, poetry and learning resources, the Review is an exploration by and about older learners. It is published under the aegis of the National Resource Center for Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes at the University of Southern Maine, E. Michael Brady, Professor and Editor. For more information please visit www.osher.net and click on LLI Review.

ALR ESTABLISHES MASTER LEADER SOCIETY
The first five members of the Academy for Learning in Retirement’s new Master Leader Society have been inducted. They were presented with certificates of recognition and their names were placed on an honorees’ plaque in the ALR office. ALR, at Empire State College in New York, established the Society to encourage more people to lead study groups. To be eligible a leader must have led at least fifteen study groups for the Academy.

GLOBAL WORDING!
This year the American language will welcome the one millionth word – most likely an ethnic hybrid. So members of the Collegium program at Westchester Community College in New York are examining the pedigrees of selected non-native words brought to our country by five different waves of immigrants. They will discover how well these foreign words survived their tempest-toss’d voyage and how many retained their pilgrim mantle.

CHEMEKETA OFFERS ENROLLMENT INCENTIVE
Last fall to spark interest and increase enrollment, the Chemeketa Center for Learning in Retirement in Oregon offered an incentive to last year’s members. The fee for the year is $30. For every new member that was recruited by a CCLR member, the CCLR member deducted $10 up to three times. If they recruited three new members their membership was free.

OLLI MEMBERS TAKE PART IN VIDEO
This past summer members of the OLLI program at the University of S. Maine in Portland were visited by Chip Cronkite, son of Walter. His video production company was hired to film profiles/interviews with “Amazing Seniors” for a new cable channel: The Retirement Living Network. Three members of OLLI were deemed “amazing,” and took part in the filming.

MORE SUDOKU
The Olli program at the University of California, Davis is offering a step-by-step guide for beginners, intermediates, and would-be experts with all the tips and hints used by the experts.

WCTC DISCUSSES RECENT ELDERHOSTEL PROGRAMS
The Learning in Retirement program at Waukesha County Technical College in Pewaukee, Wisconsin highlighted in their September newsletter, two recent Elderhostel programs their members have taken. The first program, “Your Nation’s Capital,” a program in Washington, DC, was “everything we hoped it would be,” according to one participant. The second, “The Cajun Experience: Food, Music and Dance,” took place in Lafayette, Louisiana with members eating great food, listening to local music and viewing wildlife.

That’s all for this month.
