THE PERFECT HOLIDAY GIFT
The prefect gift this holiday season is learning and adventure! Wouldn’t
it be wonderful to give and receive something really meaningful for
the holidays? The gift of Elderhostel is an experience that can change
and enrich a life. Perhaps you have relatives or friends who would love
to try an Elderhostel adventure, or who are already avid Elderhostel
participants. Give the gift of a learning adventure with an Elderhostel
gift certificate. Available in any denomination of $50 and more, the
voucher may be applied toward any Elderhostel program. The attractive
certificate is sent with a personalized letter from Elderhostel that
you can present to the recipient yourself, or if you wish, we can send
the certificate and letter directly to the beneficiary. An Elderhostel
gift certificate is certain to be a much appreciated gift. Sound like
the perfect gift for you? Tell your friends, children or grandchildren
that it’s what you’d like to receive this holiday season.
Elderhostel gift certificates can be purchased by calling 1-877-426-8056,
Monday through Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET.
CURRICLUM RESOURCES
Every six months, ein compiles all the new scholarly books and web sites
from each monthly newsletter into a single document for your convenience.
This month marks the sixth time we have done this, so we now have quite
an extensive collection for use by your Curriculum Committees. All six
compilations can be found under the MANAGING
YOUR LLI section of the ein web site. Why not print them
out, put them in a binder and give the binder to the committee? The
material there is sure to spark some ideas about new courses for your
program.
SNOWBIRD REMINDER
Just a reminder that the Institute for Learning in Retirement at Nova
Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale/Davie, Florida is extending
a warm welcome to any LLI members who find themselves in the area. For
more information give Ed Aqua, the ILR Director, a call at 954-262-8472
or by email aqua@nova.edu.
MONEY MAGAZINE’S BEST COLLEGE TOWNS
It is no coincidence that the five towns Money Magazine has picked
as the best towns to live in after retirement all have lifelong learning
institutes located in them. The five towns are Ashland, Oregon –
Athens, Georgia - Brunswick, Maine - Iowa City, Iowa – La Cruces,
New Mexico. Congratulations to the LLIs located here. Being noticed by
Money Magazine means you are doing an outstanding job.
CALL FOR PAPERS
The OLLI program at the University of S. Maine is now accepting submissions
for a publication on older learners. The deadline for submissions is January
15, 2006. For more information on the Call for Papers, contact jridge@us.maine.edu
or visit the website at www.usm.maine.edu/olli/national.
A BANNER YEAR
The Institute for Learning in Retirement at Miami University in Oxford,
Ohio had a near record year in 2004/2005. More than 300 members enjoyed
ILR activities and this fall their course lineup includes such programs
as a Luncheon Lecture Series; Roaming Through Ancient Greece; Wine-Tasting;
International Environmental Policy; A Walk in the Woods; Citizens Police
Academy; Inside the Manhattan Project; Themes and Patterns in Shakespeare;
Memorable Military Moments; Intrepid Ladies: Mystery and Mayhem in Exotic
Cities; International Sundown Cinema and much more.
IRP TO TAKE CHARTER ELDERHOSTEL
Explore the Riches of Richmond is the title of a special Elderhostel
charter program being developed for the Institute for Retired Professionals
in New York City. The program will take place during Spring Break -- Sunday,
March 19th to Friday, March 24th. Richmond, Virginia, is where members
will discover five centuries of homes, history and culture. They will
also learn about art, architecture, great historical events and enterprising
residents. From colonial aristocracy to an imported Tudor estate, Victorian
elegance on Monument Avenue to revolutionary acts of rebellion, Richmond
is a unique city of mansions, monuments and masterpieces. The trip is
limited to 35 people.
SAIL CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY
Congratulations to Seniors Active in Retirement (SAIL) at Collin County
Community College in Plano, TX. They are celebrating their 10th Anniversary
this year. They were recently written up in the Plano Courier, the local
newspaper, with an article entitled “These Seniors Don’t Slump.”
The article gave readers an in-depth look at the SAIL program.
ICL SIGNS NEW LETTER OF AGREEMENT
The Institute for Continuing Learning at Young Harris College in Georgia
has signed a new Letter of Agreement with their host. Their last one was
signed in 2000. There were only a few minor changes and new signatures,
of course. The College has a faculty representative on the Executive Board
of ICL and the relationship between the College and ICL is excellent.
HURRICANE PREPARATION
The Academy for Senior Professionals (ASPEC) in St. Petersburg, Florida
has given each of its members a Hurricane Preparedness Checklist to keep
handy in case of impending storms.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
The Lifelong Learning Institute of Northern Virginia Community College
in Annandale has begun a new outreach program. Members are asked to bring
one or more items of non-perishable food to their monthly forums, then
each month LLI members will deliver the food to a different organization.
In September 64 pounds of food was collected for the United Community
Ministries. What a great beginning!
NEWS FROM OMNILORE
Omnilore at California State University Dominguez has developed an Interest
Survey. This simple survey is being used to uncover specific interests,
skills and abilities of their membership. They have also created a new
volunteer position, Membership Care Secretary. Part of the Membership
Committee, the Membership Care Secretary is responsible for sending cards
to members who are ill or who have a major event in their lives such as
a new marriage or even an impressive wedding anniversary. They have also
redesigned their Omnilore Participation Form. Each year members are asked
to complete the form indicating the ways they are willing to participate
in the running of Omnilore. To ensure that everyone gets a copy, the form
is personally handed out to members during class.
LLIs AND LONG RANGE PLANNING
The OLLI program at Yavapai College in Arizona is undertaking a long range
planning initiative. To kick off the work they held a Roundtable Forum
where the committee was able to discuss ideas from the members to help
guide them in their planning.
The PLATO program at the University of Wisconsin Madison
held a day-long Strategic Planning & Managing Growth Workshop in October.
To prepare for that workshop they distributed a questionnaire to their
membership and used the feedback to help in their planning session.
The Explorers LLI at Salem State College in MA is wondering
how other LLIs have turned
their long-range plans into action. Explorers completed their planning
last year and would love to hear what you do to keep dust from accumulating
on it. Email Don Tritschler at tritsch@empire.net
if you have any tips for them.
The Institute for Retired Professionals at the New School
in New York City is looking ahead. The Council of Community Services of
New York State (CCSNYS) has been engaged to assist in the development
of a five-year Advancement Plan whose purpose is "to strengthen IRP's
mission-based program in light of current and emerging opportunities and
challenges." Doug Sauer, Executive Director of CCSNYS, working with
an IRP Steering Committee comprised of the Director, four Board members,
and four non-Board members, is directing the process. The Advancement
Plan process will include a review of existing IRP materials and data,
focus groups with members, interviews with key university officials, and
a survey of the membership. This survey will solicit member opinions on
the IRP's strengths and weaknesses, and what they would like to see the
IRP become over the next five years. The timetable is to present the Advancement
Plan to the Board in March 2006, and to the membership at a general meeting
in April 2006.
The Lifetime Learning Institute at Northern Virginia
Community College in Annandale held their annual all-day planning retreat
this past summer. They reviewed the current state of LLI in relation to
the Strategic Plan, assessed their future well being and considered way
to ensure the membership’s continued interest in their programs.
Major attention was given to recommendations of the Task Force regarding
a potential number limit in membership. Based on the responses to a survey
that was distributed to all members, it was agreed that “capping”
the membership is not necessarily the consensus at this time. It was agreed
that a periodic reevaluation of their progress and activities was necessary.
The Board continues to be challenged to find ways in which to encourage
more members to become involved in the ongoing operation of the program.
ein has compiled all the material about long range planning from
our web site into one concise document. You can find it under MANAGING
YOUR LLI, and it’s easy to download
for your convenience.
QUEST OFFERS FLU SHOTS
Members of QUEST in New York City were offered the chance to quickly and
easily get flu shots. The LLI arranged with the New York City Department
of Health to come on site and administer the shots at no charge to their
members.
QUEST TO RELOCATE
Still on the subject of Quest…Quest: A Community for Lifelong Learning
at the City College of NY/Center for Worker Education is moving. When
they returned for the fall semester this year they received the news that
they would be moving to new quarters in the Wall Street area by fall of
2006. The old space is being turned into condos. QUEST has been assured
that the new facility will be larger than their present one and will include
more lounge and study space as well as state-of-the-art equipment. They
look forward to continuing their long and enjoyable relations with their
hosts in their new location.
LONG TIME DIRECTOR TO LEAVE
Rich Diemer, the executive director of the Lifelong Learning Institute
at Washington University in St. Louis since 1996 will be retiring at the
beginning of the new year. A reception was held last month in his honor.
Under Rich’s leadership the LLI has grown to approximately 550 members
and offers more than 30 courses per session. An endowed account in his
honor has been set up to ensure LLIs continued success and growth.
MEETING OF THE MINDS
Last month, the 5th annual statewide Senior College conference for members,
leaders and faculty from throughout Maine was held at the Jordon Grand
Resort Hotel at Sunday River in Bethel. The conference had two aims: One,
to bring together the regular members of all the Senior Colleges in the
state to participate in enriching “senior scholar” classes
(held during the conference), and two, to provide a chance for leaders
or prospective leaders of Maine’s senor colleges to meet and exchange
information during leadership workshops.

IN PURSUIT OF LIFELONG LEARNING
Here are three more ways in which you can pursue lifelong learning on
a daily basis.
1. Read the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution.
2. Volunteer eight hours of your time to a nonprofit organization.
3. Spend a day “media free.” No radio, TV, books or magazines
– entertain nothing but your own thoughts..
That’s all for this month.

resolute overcome the obstacles to learning.
The quest quotient has always excited me more than the intelligence quotient.”
