REMINDER
Programs in the New England and East Regions who have not yet
replied to the ein email asking for your comments and thoughts on postponing
the next regional conference from 2006 to 2007 and holding it at the
SOAR program at SUNY Potsdam in New York are asked to please let ein
know your thoughts. We very much value and need your input in order
to make an informed decision. If any other program in the East/New England
Region is thinking about hosting a regional conference in 2006/2007
it might help if you know that there is $3,000 of seed money available
to offset initial expenses thanks to the efficient management of the
2004 New England Regional conference in Portland, sponsored by the OLLI
program at the University of S. Maine.
21 LLIs TO TAKE PART IN NEH ELDERQUEST PROJECT
Congratulations to the 21 LLIs, in 14 states, who will be taking part
in the Elderquest Project through a grant from the National Endowment
for the Humanities. The project will be administered by the OLLI program
at UMASS Boston under the direction of Wichian Rojanawan and Chuck Nichols.
This is an excellent example of how LLIs can work together to enrich their
programs and offer their members the very best in stimulating programming.
To see a list of the participating LLIs and a description of the project,
be sure to read the LLI
CELEBRATONS column for this month.
NEW BOOMER RESEARCH PAPER
For LLIs interested in taking steps to prepare for the coming wave of
Boomer retirees, you might be interested in a new position paper, NCCCR
and the Boomer Generation, prepared by the Planning Committee at
the Center for Creative Retirement in North Carolina. This paper is available
on-line at www.unca.edu/ncccr/reports.
ELDERHOSTEL CATALOG TO BE IMPROVED
In January, 2006, Elderhostel will launch a new and improved US &
Canada catalog. The catalog will feature an attractive new layout and
a simplified content structure, which will combine to make programs of
interest easier to find. The catalog will retain the same depth and breadth
of programming, featuring Elderhostel’s unique leaning opportunities
across the United States and Canada. The catalog will list programs first
by state, then by type. The new catalog site descriptions will be grouped
around a map of the state or province rather than preceding each program
description. Here is the catalog schedule for the coming year:
US & Canada – January 2006 – April 2006 – July 2006
International – February 2006 – May 2006 – September
2006
Adventures Afloat – January 2006 – June 2006
VERMONT OLLIS
Thanks to a grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation, a statewide network
of OLLI programs is being developed under the aegis of Deborah Worthley
at the University of Vermont. As of this time programs have been started
in Brattleboro, Montpelier, Newport/Derby, Rutland, Springfield, St. Johnsbury
and a summer program has been initiated at the Killington Resort Villages.
Contact information for all these programs will be posted on the ein web
site soon.
SURVEY HELP
If your LLI wants to conduct surveys but is a bit daunted by the prospect
of putting one together then you may be interested in checking out www.surveymonkey.com.
For $19.95 a month you can use their formats to key survey material into
the Internet. Your members then answer your questions via this site which
does all the tabulation for you and offers very good analysis tools as
well.
ATTENTION PHILONOISTS
“Announcing our Third Semester of SCISCITATION” is the attention
grabbing headline of the course brochure for the Collegium program at
Westchester Community College in New York. Starting their second year,
this program now has about 90 members and is positioning themselves as
a more serious erudite program than those offered at libraries and high
schools and more social and interactive than auditing – the very
philosophy of an LLI.
IRP DEVELOPS BEQUEST BROCHURE
The Institute for Retired Professionals at the New School in New York
City has developed a Bequest Brochure for its membership. Entitled Building
for Our Future: A Legacy That Will Live On, the brochure explains
the many different ways members can leave a bequest to the program. It
also spotlights some of the members who have already left bequests and
uses their own words to explain why they have done so.
ANNI’BOO’SARY PARTY
The WCTC Learning in Retirement program in Pewaukee, WI continued its
10th Anniversary celebration with a Halloween party. Under the theme of
“Anni’Boo’Sary” there was special entertainment,
a costume and hat contest, Halloween activities and refreshments.
OMNILOREANS DRESS-UP
Last month at their annual Halloween Bash, members of Omnilore at California
State University Dominguez Hills, participated in the world of art by
coming dressed as their favorite(or least favorite) character from a painting
they knew as inspiration for a costume. Prizes were awarded for the most
accurate representation.
POCKET PLANNER
The PLATO program at the University of Wisconsin Madison produces a simple
tri-fold pocket planner for all their members. It contains a schedule
of discussion groups, coordinators, locations of all programs and the
current year calendar – a convenient way for members to stay up-to-date
with program happenings.
RETIREMENT PLANNING SESSION
On November 17th from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. members of the Institute for Retired
Professionals at the New School in New York City will attend an important
planning care program, "Power in Planning: Controlling Your Future,"
co-sponsored by the IRP's Development Committee and the Information and
Referral Committee. The seminar will cover advanced care directions, living
wills, health care proxies and estate planning. Dr. Renee Solomon, retired
Professor of Social Work at Columbia University (and an IRP members),
will moderate the program. Among the panelists will be Natalie J. Kaplan,
fellow and founding member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys
and Doris Martin, an estate planner with the firm of Garfunkel, Wild &
Travis.
NEW BROCHURE
University for Seniors at the University of Minnesota Duluth has a full
color brochure that is beautifully illustrated on the middle flap by Edna
Blanchard, a US member and art study group leader.
ALR ENRICHMENT CAMPAIGN UPDATE
The ALR (Academy for Learning in Retirement, Saratoga Springs, NY) Enrichment
Campaign was launched in April 2005 to raise $40,000. This will allow
ALR to offer lifelong learning to more retired persons and to provide
financial stability for ALR. A major donation by the Stewart’s Corporation
set the pace for giving from the community. As of August 25, 2005, they
have raised just over $9,000.00. ALR members have contributed $7,498.00.
Outside corporations have contributed $1,871.00.
WORKING WITH TODDLERS
Members of University for Seniors at the University of Minnesota, Duluth
will be working with toddlers at the UMD Children’s Place this fall.
They will interact with the children by reading and talking with them
for half an hour per day.
THEATRE DISCOUNTS
The OLLI program at UMass Boston has developed a special collaboration
with both the Huntington Theatre and The SpeakEasy State Company in Boston
to bring OLLI members to see four shows this fall. There will be an actor
forum and discussion before or after each performance. Transportation
to and from the theatres will be provided and OLLI members will pay only
$20.00 for each matinee performance, a real bargain for theatre tickets.

IN PURSUIT OF LIFELONG LEARNING
Here are three more ways in which you can pursue lifelong learning on
a daily basis.
1. Search a large computer database using your favorite subjects as key
words.
2. Write your own obituary. What goals do you hope to meet in your lifetime?
What do you want most people to remember about
you?
3. Spend some time asking the oldest (and hopefully the wisest) people
you know what were the major lessons that they
have learned from life.
That’s all for this month.

“That is what learning is.
You suddenly understand something you’ve understood all your life,
but in a new way.”
