WRAP-UP - NEW ENGLAND/EAST REGIONAL LLI CONFERENCE
Our thanks again to the SOAR program at SUNY Potsdam in New
York for hosting the New England/East Regional LLI Conference last month.
Attendees had an excellent time sharing ideas, exchanging information,
and taking part in several different LLI Sampler Courses. “Early
Instruments and Intimate Voices,” was a particular favorite of
this attendee. A general session on Monday morning enabled all the attendees
to learn about programs in rural areas, the big city and smaller towns,
along with having the opportunity to share details and specifics about
their individual programs. What made this conference truly unique was
the pre-conference program that took full advantage of SUNY Potsdam’s
excellent school of music and concert facilities. There is seed money
available for the next New England/East regional conference in two years,
and we’re hoping a program will come forward to volunteer as host.

The Academy for Learning in Retirement at Empire State College in Saratoga
Springs, New York has changed its name to the Academy for Lifelong Learning
to reflect the changing atmosphere of retirement.

LIFELONG LEARNING MONTH
Thanks to the efforts of Jo-Ellen Unger, director of the Academy for
Lifelong Learning at Empire State College in Saratoga Springs, the New
York State Legislature has declared September – Lifelong Learning
Month! So all the programs in New York state might want to think about
capitalizing on this with special programs, etc. If you’d like
more details on what A.L.L. is doing to celebrate, feel free to contact

bachelor's and master's degree programs. Our 50-acre campus is located
in suburban Newton, Massachusetts within eight miles of downtown Boston
at the heart of the Route 128 high-tech corridor.
ASSISTANT DEAN for Lasell Village at Lasell College
Lasell Village is an internationally acclaimed campus-affiliated retirement
community managed by Lasell College in Newton, MA. A focus on living
and learning is the defining characteristic of Lasell Village and one
that makes it unique among retirement communities. Although it is one
of a growing number of college-affiliated retirement communities in
the country, it is the first to feature a required continuing education
program for its residents.
Description:
Reports to Executive Director/Dean for Lasell Village and Vice-President
for Academic Affairs at Lasell College. A 10 month, full-time position
- Aug. 15th thru June 15th
Responsibilities
Serves as liaison between Lasell Village and Lasell College campus constituents.
Plans and implement courses, lectures and intergenerational programs
for Lasell Village residents on a trimester schedule. Oversees resident
requirements for lifelong learning program at Lasell Village
Teaches six credits per semester at Lasell College.
Qualifications:
PhD in gerontology or related field; experience in program planning
for retirement age adults and college teaching experience required.
Screening of applicants will begin immediately and continue until the
position is filled. Candidates should send a cover letter, resume, philosophy

THE “BONUS YEARS”
The Third Age-The “Bonus Years:” A Forum for Boomers
was a special four- part program held last month at the Osher Lifelong
Learning Institute at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. Participants
explored aspects of the third age (50+ and active”) “bonus
years” and gained new perspectives and practical wisdom as they
moved forward. The objective was to help them seek purpose and fulfillment
within a well-balanced and flexible lifestyle. Monday explored Learning
Later, Living Greater: The Secret for Making the Most of Your After-50
Years, with this writer as the introductory speaker. The second
half of the program was devoted to the concept of adult development
and the tasks of the second half of life. Tuesday’s program looked
at Aging: What are We Afraid Of? Wednesday’s program
was devoted to Caring for Others, Caring for Self, and the
wrap-up on Thursday was all about Reaching Out, Reaching In.
After the final session, attendees and presenters mingled at a social
hour. The OLLI program is hoping to hold this type of program on a regular
basis at the beginning of each semester. Not only does it help educate
the community about opportunities after age 50, it is also great publicity
for the program.

the word about their programs. And if you’re going to be in the
City this summer, you might want to look into taking a program with
them.
DESSERT PARTY
Instead of the usual luncheon or dinner to kick off the new academic
year, this past September, the Lyceum Program at Binghamton University
in New York held a Dessert Party. A wide array of desserts were offered,
and members enjoyed partaking of the tempting goodies.
SUMMER IN THE CITY
The Institute for Retired Professionals (IRP) in New York City has three
outings in the city planned for the summer. Organized by the IRP Travel
Committee, the first took place on Thursday, June 28th. Attendees, accompanied
by a docent, toured the new exhibit on Jewish Resistance at the Museum
of Jewish Heritage. After the guided tour there was free time at the
museum before everyone gathered for lunch at about 1 PM. This month’s
tour will take members to view the collection at the New York Historical
Society.
A DELIGHTFUL SURPRISE
Members of the Learning in Retirement Program (LIRIC) at Iona College
in New Rochelle, New York received a delightful surprise when they went
to a music session on jazz bands. They expected a lecture, with perhaps
a few musicians, but instead were greeted by the entire jazz band from
New Rochelle High School. Their leader gave the class the history of
the different types of jazz music in the U.S and then samples of the
music were played. Each musical student then showed his instrument’s
variations, and also illustrated how it worked. What a great opportunity
for some intergenerational exchange.
TITANCARD
Using the TitanCard, members of the LIR at the University of Wisconsin
Oshkosh are entitled to the same benefits as Oshkosh students. Some
of these benefits are admittance to campus events at student rates and
access to the university library. It also lets them ride the Oshkosh
City Transit buses at no charge. Cards cost $6 and do not need to be
renewed.
BOOKMARKS
More than a few LLIs offer bookmarks as a way to publicize their program
to the general community. Following are two that were seen at the recent
New England/East Regional LLI conference:
The ILEAD program at Dartmouth University in Hanover, New Hampshire
has an eye-catching bookmark. On the back is information about the program,
cost, a long list of benefits and membership and contact information.
The Adult Learning program at the University of Connecticut also uses
a bookmark for publicity. This one gives a brief overview of the program,
discusses their connection with the local life care community where
some of the classes are held, and an explanation of their seminars,
special events and Winterterm sessions, along with complete contact
information.
SUMMER IN ATHENS
Summer in Athens - Georgia that is – is looking very busy for
LIR members. They have quite a few fun activities planned. They are
having brunch at the Porterhouse Grill, enjoying ice cream at a local
shop, attending the local Town and Gown theater, and enjoying coffee
and lunch in several different locations. There’s even a cheesecake
break in the schedule.
STAR PERFORMANCES
Members of the Lifelong Learning program at Coastal Carolina University
get to be stars after 8 weeks of Starshine Performance Training.
This is the ultimate course for anyone wanting to be a Star! Members
learn to have confidence, be comfortable and enjoy performing before
a group. After the eight weeks of training are over, participants will
take part in Starshine's Broadway. The Starshine performers
(all Lifelong Learners participating in the training program) are joined
by the children and staff of Teach My People, an afterschool
program for elementary school kids. Starting off with numbers from the
"King and I" and continuing through past and present Broadway
musicals, the talent of these people (ages 5 to 80!) is astonishing.

downloadable courses and course materials on an astonishing range of

Bibliophiles may find that the author of their current or recently-read
book has recorded a short video-clip about it. There are many hundreds,
