FIVE NEW ELDERQUEST PROGRAMS
Delighted by the nationwide success of his 2006 Elderquest programs
(sponsored by the OLLI at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, partially
funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, originally
offered at 19 Lifelong Learning Institutes around the country, and still
running in more than a dozen), developer, Chuck Nicholas, is pleased
to announce a whole new set of programs. This time they are not grant
funded and that means, ironically, that it will cost a lot less for
institutions to run them. See the article above for all details.
ILR DIRECTOR RETIRES
After almost 17 years at the helm of the ILR at Bluffton University
in Bluffton, Ohio, Nancy Schweingruber has retired. Congratulations,
Nancy and we wish you all the best.
MULTIPLE LOCATIONS
The Frances Pew Hayes Center for Lifelong Learning at Hodges University,
Naples, FL offers classes in multiple locations. Not only are classes
held on the campus of Hodges University in Naples, they are also held
on the Fort Myers campus of Hedges University, at the Mooring Park Learning
Center and the Homewood Residence Learning Center. If your program holds
classes at other locations, let EIN know so we can maintain an up-to-date
list. We get inquiries about other locations, especially those in retirement
communities.
THANK YOU
Thanks to Craig Anderson, President of the Lifelong Learning Institute,
Inc. in Punta Gorda, Florida for the article he wrote in their fall
newsletter. “Our Elderhostel Connection” talked about how
their program is part of a larger network of lifelong learning institutes.
He also gave them some history on the lifelong learning movement, told
them what EIN was all about and what we do, and also explained the difference
between Elderhostel and the Elderhostel Institute Network. It was a
very informative article that members were sure to find interesting.
MILR MEMBERS HONORED
Cheong Pak Chow, a member of the McGill Institute for Learning in Retirement
in Montreal has had an orchid named after him in honor of his 80th birthday.
The Orchid Registrar of the Royal Horticultural Society announced that
an orchid hybrid will be called the Phalaenopsis Cheong Pak Chow.
An avid horticulturist, Mr. Pak Chow has been a member as well as a
course moderator at MILR for more than 10 years. Congratulations, Mr.
Pak Chow!
Mebbie Aikens, a member of the McGill Institute for Learning in Retirement
has been names 2007 Citizen of the Year by the Mount Royal Municipal
Association. She was been awarded the Schofield Trophy. Mebbie not only
volunteers for the Town of Mount Royal, but at her church, at annual
book sales and at MILR as well. She also spends many evenings supporting
local street kids. Congratulations, Mebbie!

Members of the Academy for Lifelong Learning at Cape Cod Community College
in Massachusetts are on a search for old photos of ALL members and events.
These pictures will b e displayed for their 20th Anniversary celebration
later this year.
BENEFIT OF MEMBERSHIP
Members of the Institute for Learning in Retirement at Bergen County
Community College in New Jersey get to take advantage of the Dental
Hygiene Clinic at a minimal charge. With the cost of dental cleanings
so high, this is an excellent and very practical benefit of membership
in the ILR.
NEW PROGRAM GETS GREAT FEEDBACK
The Stonewall Communities Lifelong Learning Institute at Wheelock College
in Massachusetts, the first Gay/Lesbian LLI in the Network, has only
been open less than a year, but already they are receiving wonderful
feedback. People were most enthusiastic at their recent Open House and
the program is off to a great start.
SENIOR GEOGRAPHY CHALLENGE
The Academy for Lifelong Learning at the University of S. Florida, Sarasota/Manatee
offered members a real challenge last fall in the class, Senior Geography
Challenge. Through the course, participants were presented with a variety
of highly motivating, intellectually stimulating and challenging world
and United States geography activities. All of the activities were designed
to extend and enrich knowledge of geography in a relaxed, fun-filled
classroom setting. Through the use of higher-order thinking skills,
“ho hum starters,” brainteasers, riddles and terrific trivia,
participants remained actively involved. Each session included individual,
small group and full class instruction. Only a basic knowledge of geography
was necessary for participants in this class which was ideal for anyone
who enjoys geography, an intellectual challenge, and likes to have fun
learning.
COMMITTEE ON TECHNOLOGY
The Board of Directors of the Lifetime Learning Institute at Northern
Virginia Community College in Annandale has formed a Technology Study
Group. Their purpose is to stay abreast of today’s rapidly changing
technology. The Committee’s charge is to assess the need to update
the current equipment in the LLI office and the software being used.
The Committee members will study other possible administrative improvements
as well.
OLLI COOKBOOK
Members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Yavapai College
in Arizona have produced a cookbook of their favorite recipes. It was
written, compiled, designed and illustrated by members of OLLI with
stories from members. To help debut the cookbook, “The Taste of
OLLI,” a special tasting event was held last fall with samples
from the cookbook.
FASHION, IDENTITY, AND SOCIAL CHANGE
Last fall, members of the IRP in New York City interested in fashion,
social history, art, and popular culture took part in a study group
around this topic. Since the advent of the twentieth century, traditions
in apparel have changed dramatically for women, men, and children. Fashionable
clothing has become accessible for every class, size, and lifestyle.
Wars, depression, air travel, increased leisure time, and the movement
of the center of high fashion from Paris to the United States have all
influenced new styles. Participants studied the changes in the design,
manufacture, and availability of clothing over the last hundred years,
and speculated on what new trends may emerge. They also explored the
influence of art and advertising on fashion. Discussions were supplemented
with brief reports by participants. Two museum visits outside of class
time also took place.
A.L.L. ANNUAL FUND
The Annual Fund of the Academy for Lifelong Learning at Empire State
College in Saratoga Springs, New York is being funded well beyond their
expectations. The large number of members donating to the Fund is a
strong indication of the value members place on the A.L.L. experience.
In addition to supporting current operations with donations to the Annual
Fund, members have been given the option of directing gifts to two special
funds – the Endowment Fund and the Scholarship Fund. In 2008,
their 15th Anniversary Year, they would like to focus on the benefits
of increasing their Endowment Fund since the Scholarship Fund appears
to be sufficiently financed. The Endowment Fund has the long-term objective
of providing financial stability for A.L.L.
EYE-CATCHING BROCHURE
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Michigan
in Ann Arbor has published an attractive, four-color brochure to encourage
new members to join. The front of the brochure says, “Lifelong
Learning is a Banquet. What’s on YOUR plate?”
LIR HELPS IN RESEARCH PROJECT
The Learning in Retirement, Inc. program in Athens, Georgia which is
affiliated with the University of Georgia, is working with the UGA Department
of Kinesiology and the Institute of Gerontology in conducting a research
project to understand how living settings and physical function influence
the number of steps taken per day.
WHOLE FOODS COOKING CLASSES
Members of the Lagniappe Studies Unlimited/Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
at Louisiana State University had the opportunity to take a variety
of Whole Foods cooking classes this past fall. The four-week course
covered A Study of Cheese – A Study of Seafood – A Study
of Olive Oil – Dinner by Whole Foods Market. All classes were
held at the local Whole Foods Market and the last class was a dinner
hosted by the Prepared Foods Team at Whole Foods.
LIR MEETS THE AUTHORS
Members of the Learning in Retirement, Inc. program in Athens, Georgia
took part in a Meet the Authors series. Over the course of three weeks
they got to meet and talk with Louis J. Boyd who wrote Kentucky
Boy: The Top First Grade; Paige M. Cumming who wrote Under
the Liberty Oak; and Gene Younts who wrote We Are What We Were:
Memories of Rural North Carolina.
ORIGINS OF THE RUSSIAN INTELLIGENTSIA: THE ROAD TO UTOPIA
Last fall, members of the IRP in New York City looked at this unique
subject. Under Tsar Nicholas First autocratic regime, an elite group
of Russian intellectuals ("the intelligentsia") and activists
laid the philosophical and political foundations for the revolutionary
groups that were to emerge in the 1880's and 1890's and which led to
the revolutions of 1905 and 1917. In this study group they read articles,
mainly from Isaiah Berlin's Russian Thinkers. They also read
Tom Stoppard's Utopia Trilogy, which is based on the lives
and writings of these men, and, as an epilog, they read Turgenev's
Fathers and Sons.

you with people who read the same things. A sort of world-wide fan club
for books and their authors and readers.

and non-governmental organization that seeks to provide opportunities
for meaningful personal contacts between people
of diverse cultures and backgrounds. It is a co-operative network of
over 13,000 hosts and travelers who all share the goals of building
world peace, goodwill, understanding, and mutual tolerance. Find them

NEW BOOKS FOR LLI COURSES
Thanks to the OMNILORE program at California State University in Dominquez
Hills for the following book ideas:
• A Year of Magical Thinking, by Joan Didion.
This is a remarkable piece of nonfiction describing the author’s
reactions and emotions after the sudden death of her husband. She shares
her thoughts and her search for understanding.
• A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini.
The setting is Afghanistan. The book is about love and friendship and
the meaning of family ties during a time of invasion and tyrannical
governance. Most of all, it is a shocking revelation of the treatment
of women throughout those years.
• The World is Flat: A Brief History of the 21st
Century, by Thomas J. Friedman. The books shows the “surprising
advances and ubiquity of the computer revolution in the world at large.”
Think of “flat” as meaning “connected.” The
author offers facts one can’t ignore, and Friedman is definitely
a writer one can’t ignore either.
• White Guilt: How Blacks and Whites Together Destroyed
the Promise of the Civil Rights Era, by Shelby Steele. The title
says it all, indicating that white guilt has been exploited, resulting
in a lack of progress in black achievement. A controversial book of
prose that raises a number of questions.
• Dawn?, by Elie Wiesel. The book is a night-to-dawn
narrative centered on Elisha, a young holocaust survivor and Israeli
freedom fighter, who is scheduled to assassinate an English officer
in retribution for a British execution. What dilemmas does conflict
bring us to? One reads the book feeling the same anguish and torn feelings
as Elisha and the officer.

BBC EDUCATION: EVOLUTION
4000 million years of evolution crammed into one website. Includes the
full text of Darwin's Origin of Species, with an illustrated guide,
and essays on Darwin and his findings, including dissenting views to
his ideas. Also find a brief bibliography, a transcript of a debate
on Darwin, an artificial life game called Biotopia, and transcripts
of BBC television documentaries on evolution.

ELECTION
08 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

in which users build their own debate by selecting video clips from
different candidates on topics such as Iraq, health care, and education.
