BOSTON, MA (November 21, 2005)—Discover holiday traditions across
the US: a sparkling Christmas at the Biltmore Estate, a “Dickens” Christmas
in Victorian Cape May, a stay in New York and many more options to sample
both old and new traditions in different regions of the country. Here is
a sampling of Elderhostel’s exciting holiday learning adventures. All programs

The
Vanderbilts and Christmas at the Biltmore Estate
Be part of the sparkling Christmas celebration in North Carolina at
the Biltmore Estate, America's largest mansion. Learn about the Vanderbilt
family, explore the grand house, enjoy the lavish Christmas decorations,
and become familiar with the men who built Biltmore and designed the
extensive gardens and winery. |

Visit Biltmore Village, Cedar Crest, the beautifully decorated Grove
Park Inn, and awe-inspiring churches such as St. Lawrence Basilica and
All Souls Cathedral. Program is taught by a local historian and author
with in-depth knowledge of the Vanderbilts and the Biltmore Estate.

Ozark
Holiday Traditions of Bygone Eras
Immerse yourself in the holiday merriment of two distinct communities
in the Ozarks.
Begin in Branson, Miss. with the ways that the early Ozark settlers brought
joy into their homes - music, games, food and hand-made gifts - followed
by a look at the lavishness and finery of Victorian festivities in Eureka
Springs, Ark. Compare and contrast life and customs among the no-nonsense
early Ozark settlers with those of the extravagant Victorians. Learn about
traditional Ozark music, and enjoy a Christmas show in Branson. Take in
scents of cinnamon, apples and evergreen, stroll through an Ozark village,
and interact with crafts people creating works of art from wood, copper,
clay and glass. Meet a Victorian lady in her parlor, and discover how
the season was celebrated in her time. Study the elements of Victorian
architecture during a lecture and home tour.

Dickens Christmas in Victorian Cape May
Where better to get into the spirit of a Victorian Christmas than Victorian
Cape May, the nation's first seashore resort? This paradise by the sea
becomes a true Christmas village, with garlands, trees and twinkling lights.
The customs and traditions we celebrate today originated in the Victorian
era, and local experts will bring a Victorian Christmas to life. Enjoy
programs on Charles Dickens, author of the beloved A Christmas Carol;
a workshop on Victorian ornaments; performances; visits with living history
characters; a guided walk of the Frank Furness designed Emlen Physick
Estate, authentically decorated for the season; a trolley ride to enjoy
the holiday lights; and an elegant tea lunch at the Twinings Tearoom.

Holidays
in the High Country
Celebrate the holidays in beautiful Prescott, Ariz. while studying pioneer
history and early holiday celebrations in the Arizona Territory. Enjoy
a festival of traditional storytelling, cowboy poetry and music, and visit
nearby historic sites, including Arizona's original territorial governor's
mansion. Both programs will culminate in sumptuous holiday feasts, including
a visit by Santa at Christmas. Be prepared to enjoy the spirit of the
season in the company of new friends! Christmas program includes touring
the red rocks of Sedona and experiencing Sedona's Festival of Lights.

York for Holidays: Sights, Sounds and Tastes of the City
Nobody does the holidays like New York, with Yuletide cheer, dazzling
storefront displays, and seasonal festivities on every corner. Enjoy the
tapestry of movement and color along Fifth Avenue, view the Christmas
tree and skating rink at Rockefeller Center, stroll through Central Park,
and marvel at the churches and grand hotels along the way. See the world-famous
Rockettes in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, and then get a taste
of traditional holiday celebrations on Little Italy's Mulberry Street.
Explore New York City's historic neighborhoods as you take a walk along
Chinatown's colorful Mott Street, experience the flavor of Greenwich Village,
and listen to holiday carols at South Street Seaport's festive "Singing
