Celebrating Ian Fleming’s 100th Anniversary
BOSTON, October 10 – With his trademark tuxedos, martinis and fast cars, the escapades of Ian Fleming’s famous James Bond character are known throughout the world. In May 2008, Elderhostel, the world’s largest not-for-profit educational travel organization for adults, offers a unique opportunity to celebrate the 100th birthday of the man behind James Bond and discover where fact and fiction overlap. Utilizing the unique resources of Ian Fleming Publications Ltd., this seven-night learning adventure begins in London where participants will join some of the world’s foremost intelligence and Fleming experts to discuss the man, the novels, the era, the films, and real and fictional spies. Ian Fleming Publications Ltd is the Fleming family company that owns the copyright in all Ian Fleming’s works. All of Ian Fleming’s James Bond books are published in the United States by Penguin (http://us.penguingroup.com.) For more information about Ian Fleming, Ian Fleming Publications Ltd and the Ian Fleming Centenary, please visit www.ianflemingcentre.com.

Participants will be on-hand in London on the day of celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of Ian Fleming’s birth on May 28, 2008. Highlights of the program include lectures by biographers and authors for a look into the life of Ian Fleming, insight into pre-Cold War England, and the setting for the James Bond character. Bond enthusiasts will hear from a Russian defector now living in England and learn about the real-life stories of British and Soviet spies and the code-breaking VENONA project.

Participants will explore “Fleming’s London” on a city excursion with noted military historian and intelligence expert, Nigel West. Lectures by West, Professor David Cannadine and Corelli Barnett explore the history of the Secret Intelligence Service, Cold War politics and more. Writer and filmmaker Murray Buesst will deliver an illustrated lecture on the enduring popularity of the Bond character.
