NASHVILLE – June 21 - Known as Music City, Nashville is also a hub of education and culture in the South. This summer, Elderhostel, the world’s largest not-for-profit educational travel provider for older adults, offers an opportunity to explore ancient Egypt and its influences, on The Quest for Immortality: Treasures of Ancient Egypt, in association with Belmont University in Nashville. This adventure is offered as a one-day program in Elderhostel’s Day of Discovery series, highlighting the Quest for Immortality exhibit at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. A three-night Weekender program including local landmarks and architecture runs in July and September.

The Day of Discovery begins at the Egyptian artifact exhibit in the Frist Center, where Elderhostelers are accompanied by an Egyptology expert for an in-depth look at the largest collection of Egyptian antiquities exhibited in North America. Objects on exhibit are on loan from Egypt and represent more than 3,000 years of the Egyptian quest for eternal life, including sculptures of Egyptian royalty and deities, tomb furnishings and an educational display on mummification.

The influences of the ancient culture are still visible in the Egyptian-Revival style that has left its mark around Nashville. Excursions to local landmarks highlight the Downtown Presbyterian Church, an exotic example of Egyptian-Revival architecture, and the pre-Civil War Acklen (Belmont) Mansion, which houses an exhibit on the influence of 19th-century Egyptian-Revival architecture. University faculty cover lectures on ancient civilizations, and a historic preservationist offers insight on protecting and maintaining artifacts and architectural treasures.

Elderhostel, founded in 1975, is the world’s largest not-for-profit educational travel organization for older people. More than 160,000 people enroll in Elderhostel’s nearly 8,000 programs annually. Elderhostel provides exceptional learning adventures throughout the United States and Canada and in more than 90 countries around the world. In 2004, Elderhostel launched Road Scholar to meet the needs of a new generation of independent educational travelers. For more information, please visit www.elderhostel.org or www.roadscholar.org
