Elderhostel Welcomes Sports Fans to Sports in America at the Chautauqua Institution

Boston, Mass. (May 2, 2008) — NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Sports Illustrated senior contributing writer Frank DeFord will be among the speakers this summer when sports fans will have the opportunity to learn about the state of sports in America and its impact on American lifestyles, culture and customs at the Chautauqua Institution. Elderhostel, the world’s largest not-for-profit educational travel organization for adults, brings sports enthusiasts 55 and over front and center at Chautauqua on a six-night program to examine sports culture in the U.S. — from youth and amateur athletics to college and professional sports — and the impact of sports on cities, youth, education and culture. Participants will examine the influence of television and escalating salaries and the future of Olympic sports, as well as explore whether the interest of the general fan has been eclipsed by the "big money" business entity of athletics in the U.S.

In addition to Goodell and DeFord, featured speakers include Clark Kellogg, CBS Sports college basketball commentator; Donna Lopiano, former CEO of the Women’s Sports Foundation, and Sean McManus, president of CBS News and CBS Sports.

Elderhostel participants will attend daily private morning lectures led by instructors-in-residence from Chautauqua, in addition to the public lectures offered by the Institution. Afternoons offer a variety of activities including lectures and musical performances. Accommodations and all meals are part of the program, including nightly five-course dinners in the Chautauqua Room at the Athenaeum Hotel.

"Each year Elderhostel offers at least six programs at Chautauqua — during its summer season and in the off-season — bringing hundreds of lifelong learners to the Institution for a unique educational experience," says Fran Rivkin, associate vice president for North America programs at Elderhostel. "Sports continue to play a major role in American culture — this is a unique opportunity to hear from experts with insights into the dynamic facets of this national obsession."
