Elderhostel’s Day of Discovery Program Tells the Untold Stories of Ellis Island

New York (April 11, 2008) — Elderhostel, the world’s largest not-for-profit educational travel organization offers participants an in-depth and unseen exploration of Ellis Island this May during the Day of Discovery program, Immigration & Public Health: Completing the Ellis Island Story. This one-day adventure, offered in association with Save Ellis Island (www.saveellisisland.org), will reveal the "hidden side" of the island through interactive learning, guided tours, and expert lectures, and will take place on May 19th from 9:30am to 3:30pm at Ellis Island.

After arriving by ferry, participants will be submerged in the stories of the island’s buildings and the 1.2 million immigrants who journeyed through the doors of the U.S. Public Health Service hospital (USPHS), once used to treat immigrants with a general aliment or "loathsome and contagious" disease. They will experience what it was like traveling through the Island first-hand during an interactive program where they will "decide an immigrant’s fate," and receive a National Park Service Ranger-guided tour of the Registry Hall and museum. Additional highlights include an exploration of the unrestored hospital buildings currently closed to the public, and visit to the exhibit Future in the Balance: Immigration, Public Health, and the Ellis Island Hospitals.

Participants will also learn about the Ellis Island Institute, and the ongoing project of restoring the thirty hospital buildings, once the largest USPHS hospital in the country. Participants will speak with Dr. Alan Kraut, a celebrated immigration scholar and former president of the Immigration and Ethnic History Society, about the medical screening process and treatment of immigrants passing through Ellis Island. Dr. Kraut is an award-winning author and has been published in journals such as the Journal of American History and the Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences. He has also appeared on several documentaries for PBS and the History Channel. Participants will be able to put his knowledge to the test during a question and answer session following the lecture.

"We are delighted to offer our participants such unique experiences they would not be able to receive anywhere else," says Maeve Hartney, associate vice president of special programs at Elderhostel. "This Day of Discovery program will give participants the opportunity to hear stories of the immigrants and learn the history of Ellis Island not known to the public."
