From Gullah Culture to Tuskegee Airmen, Lifelong Learning
Programs Explore Black Heritage in the US
February is Black History Month – the perfect time to plan
a learning getaway to discover the richness and complexity of African-American
heritage and its profound contributions to American society and culture.
Elderhostel, the popular not-for-profit, lifelong learning and travel
organization, is sponsoring a variety of programs that explore and celebrate
African-American history.
Explore the fascinating history and facts behind the Underground Railroad
movement, experience the unique Gullah island culture firsthand while
interacting with members of the Gullah community, go behind the scenes
at Morton Field in Alabama to discover how the famed Tuskegee Airmen trained
to be topnotch aviators, and more. Boston-based Elderhostel collaborates
with educational and cultural institutions across the country world to
provide unique learning opportunities that immerse participants in these
subjects, with the guidance of academic faculty, local historians and
other experts.
Programs are about a week in length, and are complete packages that include
daily classes and presentations, field trips, a variety of activities,
accommodations and meals. Costs start at under $600 per person.
While Black History Month is a February event, Elderhostel’s Black

programs that celebrate African-American history and culture.
Tuskegee
National Historic Site: Airmen, Educators, Scientists, and More

and educators who made an impact on American society: the Tuskegee
Airmen, Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, Jr., and more.

aviators.
Gullah:
African-American Culture in the Lowcountry/History of Lowcountry Plantations/
Four Lowcountry Novels

5-night program; Date: May 15-20, 2005 Cost: $558
In this three-course adventure, explore the unique African-American history
of the Lowcountry and discover the richness of Gullah culture with its
traditions, folk rituals, and language. Then, delve into the life and
inner workings of the historic plantations of Lowcountry, and examine
the human drama and cultural diversity of South Carolina's Lowcountry
through four novels that are set in this historic region.
The
Underground Railroad: Freedom at all Costs
Location: Kentucky
5-night program; Date: June 5-10, 2005 Cost: $597
per person
Discover the legacy of the Underground Railroad as you explore its history
and the current struggles for human freedom at the Freedom Center, which
celebrates courage, cooperation and perseverance, using the Underground
Railroad as a lens through which to explore a range of freedom issues.
Take field trips to historic Underground Railroad sites and interaction
with history experts, staff and docents.
